To really experience St. Barts you will need to rent a car. Driving on the island is actually quite fun as there is very little traffic and the narrow winding roads are in good shape. Most autos and rental cars on the island are on the small size (the average American vehicle looks very out of place on St. Barts). The most inexpensive ride is the Suzuki Samurai. The Samurai is usually a stick shift and lacks both power steering and air conditioning. It does, however, have four wheel drive. For those seeking a slightly smoother ride (with air conditioning) consider the Vitara, Terios or the new line of Suzukis - the Alto, Ignis and Liana - which are making their way to the islands rental car market.
